The style
Black and grey realism
Photographs, translated into skin: light, shadow and texture built from black ink and its greys, with no outlines doing the work. By Nick McKnight at White Lotus Tattoo, Brunswick, Georgia.
What you're actually paying for
Realism is unforgiving. A portrait that's five percent off doesn't look like the person at all, and a soft, low-contrast piece turns to mush as it heals. Nineteen years of doing this is what you're paying for: knowing which needle groupings hold a highlight, how much contrast to build so the piece still reads a decade on, and when to add a touch of realistic color and when to leave it alone.
Portraits and memorials
People, pets, grandparents, a brother in uniform. One strong reference photo matters more than anything else, and we'll choose it together. More on portrait tattoos and pet portraits and memorial pieces.
Wildlife and nature
Lions, wolves, owls, elk, bears and the coast itself. Fur, feathers and water are where realism earns its reputation.
Healed is what counts
The portfolio shows healed pieces next to fresh ones on purpose, including a bass photographed fresh on the left and healed on the right. The healed version is the tattoo you live with.

Questions
Good to know
What is a black and grey realism tattoo?
A tattoo built from black ink diluted into a full range of greys to reproduce a photograph's light, shadow and texture on skin, with no outlines doing the work.
How long does a realism tattoo take?
A portrait or animal head the size of a hand is usually a full-day session. Sleeves and large pieces run across several sessions.
Will it still look sharp in ten years?
Realism that's built with real contrast and needle choices made for healed skin ages well. That's why healed photos are in the portfolio next to fresh ones.
What makes a good reference photo?
High resolution, sharp focus and strong directional light. One main reference beats five mediocre ones.
