The style
Fine line and small tattoos
Delicate single-needle lines, soft shading and small, meaningful pieces, by Kaitlyn McKnight in Brunswick, Georgia.
What fine line actually is
Thin, controlled lines made with single needles, minimal outlines, and shading built from soft gradients rather than solid black. It's the style behind delicate script, botanicals, dainty symbols and the kind of small tattoo you forget is there until someone asks about it.
Small doesn't mean simple
A tiny tattoo has the least room for error. Letters need breathing room so they don't close up, details need enough size to survive healing, and the design has to read from a normal distance, not just under a magnifier. The consultation is where the size gets decided honestly.
Soft shading
Feminine, soft-shaded work uses gentle gradients and negative space instead of heavy black, so a flower or a figure looks like a drawing on skin rather than a stamp. It's also what gives fine line its lightness.
Where it sits
Wrist, inner forearm, collarbone, ankle, ribs, behind the ear, the back of the arm. Placement affects how a fine line piece ages, so it's part of the plan, not an afterthought.
Built to age well
Fine lines spread slightly over the years. A good fine line tattoo is designed for that from the start, and if anything needs attention once you're healed, touch-ups are free.

Questions
Good to know
What is a fine line tattoo?
A tattoo drawn with very thin, single-needle lines and little or no heavy outline, usually with soft shading or none at all. The result is delicate and detailed rather than bold.
Do fine line tattoos fade or blur?
All tattoos soften with time; fine line shows it sooner if it's drawn too small or placed where skin rubs. A good fine line tattoo is planned for aging, with a little more weight where lines meet and space between letters, and touch-ups are free once you're healed.
How small can a tattoo be?
Small enough to hide under a watch band, as long as the design still reads: letters need breathing room and tiny details close up over the years. Kaitlyn will tell you honestly what will still look sharp in ten years.
Does a fine line tattoo hurt less?
Usually. Thin lines and soft shading put far less needle time into the skin than a solid piece, so most small fine line tattoos are over quickly.
How much does a small fine line tattoo cost?
Kaitlyn's rate is $175 an hour, billed by actual machine time, so a small piece costs a fraction of a full session. Send the idea and size for a clear estimate before you book.
